Major Update (possibly last)


I've been working on a large update the past week.

some of the biggest new features include:

  • Info panel and modifiers
    • when clicking a button to enter a level, it would previously just sent you straight in. now a screen will appear giving you basic info about that level, such as what enemies will appear there, the type of level (endless, boss, normal, etc.). Screen shown below.
    • I also added a new type of level - timed. Basically, you just need to survive a certain amount of time to advance. Only one level currently uses this.
    • The game was lacking some replayability and the levels all felt pretty similar so in an attempt to remedy that I added level modifiers. There are currently only two, enemy speed and damage. The modifiers will make the game far more difficult but will give you double XP and coins for each activated
    • I also added some more upgrades including a burst shot upgrade for your main turret, unlocked at level 9 and a wizard who comes to your ship at level 10 and will sell you a burning aura for you ship, dealing 1 damage per second to enemies in range. the burning aura was pretty easy to make, just a shader, the same one used for the shockwave but colored differently, and a second long timer which whenever it times out gets the enemies in an area 2D and damages each of them.
    • Critical hits were also added to the turret. With all the weapons I added to the higher levels, the turret was starting to feel less good. To counteract this I simply added a critical hit system, which has a base 20% chance to do 2x damage and you can get upgrade cards to increase those stats.
    • I kinda rushed to add the shock wave weapon last update and forgot to add the texture in some places and forgot to add upgrade cards for it - its fixed now
    • added a mini map to the inside of the rocket to hopefully make it a bit less confusing
    • added particles for when an enemy takes fire damage
    • changed dash particles and animation
    • Lastly, I wanted some more variety of enemies for the more difficult levels but didn't really want to draw new graphics so i created and upgraded bat enemy with a different color scheme

This was my first ever game. I've loved developing it and have learned a ton in the process, but I'm starting to lose some motivation to work on it. I've been spending hours every day for the past month and a half on this game. I have plenty more features to add but I kind of feel like its time to move on to a new project, especially since I have school starting soon and won't have as much time to work on game dev. Whether I continue or not, I feel pretty good about this project and hope some people have enjoyed playing!
